Public Data Defined

Public data is information that can be freely used, reused and redistributed by anyone with no existing local, national or international legal restrictions on access or usage. It can include anything from a monthly updating dataset on a government data portal to PDF files that are only accessible via Freedom of Information requests.

In an enterprise, data can be classified as public if the information is available to all employees and all individuals or entities external to the corporation.

However, public data can have some form of restrictions placed on it. These restrictions typically come from proprietary sources including: data released in proprietary data formats, time sensitive releases, licensing from proprietary means used in creation, accessing, and re-using/re-mixing the data.
