Startup Program Defined

A startup program or a startup application is a program that runs automatically after a computer system has started up. A startup program is usually installed in order to monitor a device or to check for software updates.

Startup programs are usually services that run in the background and can be either part of the operating system or from an installed or download program.

Advantages of startup programs include:

• Critical security software will always load without intervention from users, ensuring that the PC is continually protected.
• Software can automatically check for updates.
• The frequently accessed programs are pre-loaded,  providing fast access to the program, saving both time and effort.

Disadvantages of startup programs include:

• The computer loads programs users don’t want or need, unnecessarily slowing the time it takes users PC to boot.
• The computer continually runs programs that are rarely used, wasting system memory and overtaxing the operating systems resources.
• Unwanted plug-ins and dangerous programs often conceal themselves in startup areas of the registry and run without a users knowledge.
